O-K-L-A-H-O-M-A!

This morning I finalized plans to work at the Oklahoma Arts Institute this summer. I will have the opportunity to work with students and refine my back-stage skills. It should be a fun way to spend a portion of the summer.

Unusual toilets

Perhaps this model will be installed in concert halls across the globe?

A quality place to live

A friend sent me a link to this story about my former home, Dubuque, Iowa.

This is what she had to say:
"Dubuque is on the top 10 list of small cities to live in the US. Who would have thought? Looks like you moved from a winner to a real crap hole."

Funny.

When I lived in Dubuque, many people said the same things about that town. I think this is one of those cases where the grass may appear greener. Yes, I loved living in Dubuque...it is a great town. But, Amarillo is great too. Like fine wines, the two are appreciated for different reasons. I mean, where else can you earn a free 72 oz. steak?

However, if you are looking for a new place to reside might I recommend one of the 10 best small cities in the US? ;-)

In service

This morning I served as a lector for Mass at my parish. I have served as a lector before, but this was the first time here in Amarillo.

My first memory of lectoring is from the second grade. Mrs. Krogman selected me to read for an all-school Mass. Why do I not forget this particular lectoring experience? Perhaps because my reading was from the book of Deuteronomy. That's a big word for anyone, especially an 8-year old.

While on a mission trip in Appalachia I read the scripture for a Thanksgiving serive at a mission parish. A small group of people gathered with a great amount of spirit. Powerful.

Reading the scripture is act of proclamation, sharing the word with the faithful. There are those rare occassions when we know that the words ring true with the assembled. The '01 Streams of Living Water Symposium provided one of those experiences...

The personal experiences are good. They are faith affirming. But that is not why we do it. It is a service. A service to our Church, a service to our Church family.

It's good to be serving in this capacity again.

Unexpected

It's the unexpected treasures that can bring a smile to our days. Friday afternoon I recieved an unexpected phone call from a friend. He was calling to say hello and wish me a belated happy birthday. Bizarre, perhaps. Typical for him? Most definetely. The call definetely brought a smile to my face on a Friday afternoon and incited a fair amount of jesting from my co-workers. Oh well, perhaps they are just jealous. ;-)
