The show must go on

The show must go on. Friday night's symphony concert was reconfigured due to the freak Amarillo snow storm. A few minutes before the start of the show this is what the parking lot outside the performer's entrance looked like.

We were able to avoid cancelling the concert because of the generosity of our guest artist, Davide Cabassi. We released the orchestra from the concert service and provided an alternate performace for our die hard concert-goers. Approximately 50 folks joined us for an intimate evening with Davide Cabassi.

Here's some looks from the show:

Thank you for an amazing evening of music, Davide.

In West Texas, anything is possible...

Last week, high temperatures were in the 80s. Today is a very different story. A blizzard is upon us.

From the National Weather Service:
AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS WINTER STORM WILL IMPACT THE PANHANDLES
REGION THROUGH EARLY SATURDAY. HEAVY SNOW WILL SPREAD FROM
NORTHWEST TO SOUTHEAST ACROSS THE PANHANDLES THIS MORNING. BY
MIDDAY TODAY...HEAVY SNOW AND VERY STRONG WINDS WILL BE AFFECTING A
LARGE PORTION OF THE AREA. NORTHERLY WINDS OF 30 TO 40 MPH WITH GUSTS
OVER 50 MPH WILL CAUSE WIDESPREAD BLOWING SNOW WITH NEAR ZERO
VISIBILITY IN WHITEOUT CONDITIONS THROUGH TONIGHT. HEAVY SNOWFALL OF 6
TO 12 INCHES IS EXPECTED ACROSS THE WARNING AREA WITH AMOUNTS IN
EXCESS OF 12 INCHES COMMON MAINLY ACROSS THE OKLAHOMA AND EXTREME
NORTHERN TEXAS PANHANDLES. SNOW DRIFTS OF 10 TO 20 FEET WILL BE POSSIBLE
BEFORE THE SNOW FINALLY ENDS SATURDAY MORNING.

My favorite part is the section that refers to the 10-20 foot drifts.

This winter weather storm on most days could be a delight. However, today has a bit of a complication. It's concert day. That means I'm not staying home curled under my blankets in front of a fire. Today, I'll be prepping a hall and an orchestra for a concert in the midst of a blizzard.

My years in Iowa have trained me for this.

Well, I need to go add a few things to my car - shovel, icemelt, etc.

Hitchin' Post

Yes, your eyes were not deceiving you that is the sign of 5 horses hitched to a horse statue in Amarillo. There are some things that only happen here. And yes, those five horses and riders are preparing to merge into traffic on Amarillo Blvd.

Monday morning chuckle

This morning I was reminded of a fun time from what I thought was the not-so-distant past.

Eeks. It is a bit distant.

Oh my, this was 12 years ago.

Crikey!

Well, Jozzy thanks for reminding me of the reality of my age.

Oy!

On this day, 12 (oy - yes really) 12 years ago, I, with my co-conspirator, Chiara, was in the front seat of an old pick-up truck. Chiara was driving as we chaperoned our friend Jozzy to her surprise birthday party. Hmm, we had placed a brown paper bag over Jozzy's head. We had drawn a face on the front of the bag. Hmm, we refused to talk during the long drive from Jozzy's house to the party destination. I think we freaked Jozzy out. Hmm, I know we laughed for a long time that evening.

Honestly laughter was a common theme to many of our gatherings.

Hmm, I remember a rubber snake that lived on the rearview mirror in that truck.

Hmm, I think Gumby and Pokey were involved in that particular party.

The pure silliness of these high school memories makes me smile - and remember some really great times.

More flowers in the garden

The daffodils have finally bloomed, I guess they are a late season bulb for Amarillo. (Most folks in Amarillo had daffodil blooms weeks ago!)

These sunny blooms welcome you as you enter our house.

Flowers: Check!

This morning I met with our friendly florist, Wilson. Wilson helped me put my ideas to paper - I'm so excited to see the finished product! The flowers will add some fun pizazz to the day. Even though I'm excited to see the flowers - I think I can wait. I need the 107 days remaining to finalize many details. In the meantime, these pics will give you an idea of some of the flowers we will be including in our florals.

Purple Mini Calla Lillies

Cymbidium Orchids

Signs of Spring

Bryan and I have been working to enhance the lawn at our home, included in these projects was some much needed attention to the flowerbeds. Last fall we spent a weekend tearing out weeds and a "thorn tree" and replaced it with three flthaower beds. We filled the beds with flower bulbs, pansies, Russian sage plants, and inches of mulch. Now that Spring is here we are starting to see some signs of Spring, including these:

We have almost a dozen clumps of pansies like these. Bryan and I spent some time looking at these plants this evening - amazed by their pure size. This bloom is on our largest clump of pansies.

I apologize for the drooping bloom picture. I failed to take a picture of this bloom earlier in it's life. My friend Kel brought me several tulip bulbs from Amsterdam. I have several other tulips that have yet to bloom. I did a poor job of labeling each bulb when I planted last fall - so, it's a surprise each time one starts to open.

Music for the Ceremony

This afternoon Bryan and I met with the music director at St. Thomas. This was our first chance to talk about some of the elements of our marriage ceremony. Jim sent us home with a CD of music samples to start the creative juice flowing.

So, we are gathering recommendations. Do you have any favorite songs to incorporate into Catholic Wedding Ceremony? What are your thoughts?

Since we are getting married on July 4th, I thought it might be fun to include a fireworks reference, how about this for a recessional?

How do you get there from here?

This map is intended to answer the question, how do you get there from here. Is this the way to Amarillo?

Pause for comedic break:

In all seriousness, we have created this Google Map to help you find your way around Amarillo. We will continue to add destinations in the coming weeks, so check the map often. If there is something you would like to see included, leave a comment or email me. We are trying to include the wedding essential locations, as well as some fun things to do, and places to eat.

9 point underbustle

A what?

A 9 point underbustle.

Oh yes, it's true - my dress has arrived! I went to the shop for my first alterations fitting today. Talk was of the appopriate bustle for the gown and we finally opted for the 9-point underbustle. Oh my. Thankfully the pinner assured me that the ribbons and buttons would be numbered so that they could be easily figured out on the big day.

122 days and counting!
