Wimps

Wimps.

That's the word that comes to mind this week. This evening I spent some time catching up on Facebook. A large portion of the posts this week are from students complaining that classes were in session in AISD. Apparently a temperature of -1 is too cold to go to school.

I think to myself - hmm, I went to school in Eastern Iowa. I know I went to school when the temperature was -1. In fact, I think I took my darling husband out for a tour of the Mississippi River in subzero weather. Yes, I think there is even a picture of us on one of those subzero days.

The inquisitive side of me wonders if there is any proof of said cold temperatures. The beauty of Google says, why yes, why yes there is. Weatherbase shares a snapshot of Clinton that indicates an average number of days per year that are below zero. Yes, it happens many times each year. And yes, we do go to school when it is that cold.

Yikes, I'm beginning to think I sound like one of those "old people".

When I was in school, we walked up hill, both directions, in the snow, everyday...

Nah, it wasn't like that at all. But there were some days that I walked. And some days that I walked in the snow.

Except for those days when it really was too cold. On those days it was so cold that the engine blocks on the buses are frozen solid.

Then it would be just crazy to go to school.

Communication

I had to chuckle when I saw this post on Jon Mark's blog today - especially since the sign is in our neighborhood.

I sure hope this person was able to reach David.

Read the story here.

Ink cartridges vs. Inkjet Printers

This weekend I am printing our wedding invitations. Janet designed an amazing suite for the invitation that I'll be printing at home.

Needless to say, I am becoming very familiar with paper and printers this weekend.

So, might I just say - the pricing structure for inkjet cartridges is a little out of whack. It would actually be cheaper for us to purchase a new inkjet printer instead of a replacement cartridge. However, since I have currently used 4 color cartridges I don't think this is the best idea - after all, that would mean I would have 4 printers lying around the house. We try to be environmentally friendly with our purchase practices. (In fact the invitations will be printed on recycled paper and sent in envelopes made from recycled paper). However, it seems the big box mentality wishes to punish us for the ecological choice by pricing the replacement cartridge for a printer to be more expensive that a replacement printer (which by the way comes with two of the aforementioned ink cartridges). Our materialistic society has created this unfortunate set of circumstances.

How do we change this phenonemon? Can we?

So long Docs

Over 10 years ago, I purchased a pair of Doc Marten shoes. These shoes have served me well for over a decade. An impressive "feet" for any pair of shoes. Today I had to say farewell to these beloved shoes.

The soles are both cracked all the way through (not good on the first rainy day in months) - these cracks were open all the way to my socks. But this was not the flaw that did the shoes in. Oh no, in fact I have been wearing these shoes this way for months (maybe even a year!). No, today the top of the shoe disconnected itself from the sole of the shoe.

It was the parting blow.

Bryan made me do it oh beloved shoes. He made me dispose of you. You are gone but not forgotten and perhaps someday soon I will acquire a distant cousin of yours to fill the void on my feat.

Christmas Cactus

Ok, I'll admit it - I am behind on blogging about some of my more random activities of the past few weeks. What can I say? Life got in the way. However, today is a Leap Day - so, suspend disbelief and grant me this opportunity to say a few of the more random things on my mind.

This is a picture of my Christmas Cactus.

This Christmas Cactus is proof that my thumb in not completely brown (although at the moment my peace lily would disagree - but that is a topic for another conversation, and clearly will not bring me peace to discuss it here).

As I was saying, this is a picture of my Christmas Cactus. This picture of my Christmas Cactus was taken at wait for it - wait for it - the week after Christmas. I must first make note that the cacti in my apartment started to bloom on December 21 and remained in full flower until well after the 1st of the year. Yes, this is the ideal time for a Christmas Cactus to bloom and proof that my thumb has a little bit of green running through it. Phew, I was worried for a moment that I had lost all of those science inclined tendencies while working in the performing arts. BUt this cactus and it's Christmas blooms, well it has restored faith in my science background. And this faith can justify the tens of thousands of dollars I spent earning a science degree.

Umm, ok, maybe that is a step too far - even if it is leap day.

Ok, perhaps all this picture really proves is that I can keep a plant alive and maybe, just maybe, someday I could keep a pet alive.

What?

What was that you sad?

Cacti by nature are extremely low maintence and are best left unattended.

Drat.

Hmm, well does it count that I have kept these plants alive for over two years? Come on now...that's got to be worth something. Seriously.

Le Sigh.

Nifty Invention

During the last concert set, a friend brought me a gift from Japan. Now, I'll admit this reminds me of the type of gift that my
grandma might bring back from a trip for me. However, the Anylock is a dandy invention. The gizmo provides an airtight seal for plastic bags - like potato chips, frozen veggies and other things that need to be sealed because a single gal does not eat through them as fast as a growing family might. Thankfully, the friend gave me some directions before her departure as she knew I would not be able to read the characters on the label. These AnyLocks have replaced my chip clips and clothespins.
